I have been doing gardening since a very young age and always shared my experience with my friends but a year ago I thought I should write blogs which will help my fellow gardeners.
So what are the 5 essentials which a plant require to grow / thrive in all kinds of environments.
I call them LAWNS. Confused ?? You should not be. Here they are :-
Light , AIR , Water , Nutrients and Space.
I will go in details explaining each and every thing.
1. Light :-
Light is one of the most important factors for growing houseplants. All plants require light for photosynthesis, the process within a plant that converts light, oxygen and water into carbohydrates (energy). This much-needed energy is required by a plant in order to grow, bloom and produce seed. Plants need light — they can’t survive without it.
If your plant is not getting enough light, the most common sign is the yellowing and dropping of leaves, stunted leaf growth, elongated stems, and a dull-green color. If your plant is getting too much light, then its leaves will have singed tips, burned patches, or will be falling off
2. Air :-
The two primary reasons plants need is air to photosynthesize (make food) and to breathe. Plants need to breathe for the same reason people and animals must breathe – they need oxygen to convert food into energy. The relationship between air and indoor plants is crucial to keeping your plants looking their best.
If air is not available to the roots, it can cause the roots to fail. … When this happens, roots cannot absorb sufficient water and nutrients to the plant, causing yellow or brown leaves, plant stress and a reduced life span of the plant. Roots are denied sufficient air when the soil does not allow for air.
Water is used for transpiration carrier of nutrients from the soil to green plant tissues. Water forms over 90% of the plant body by green or fresh weight basis. Plants can synthesis food through photosynthesis only in the presence of water in their system. Water helps to maintain the turgidity of cell walls.
All living things need to water to survive. … So if a plant does not get enough water, it will shrink. If it goes long enough without water it will die because the plant uses water for a lot of different jobs needed to keep the plant alive
These six essential nutrients are nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, sulfur and calcium. The cool thing about these key nutrients is that they help create new cells, which then organize into plant tissue. Without these nutrients, growth and survival would not occur.
Plants need nutrients for the same reasons that animals need them. They need them to germinate, grow, fight off diseases and pests and to reproduce. Like animals, nutrients are needed in larger, smaller or trace amounts for the plant to stay healthy.
A deficiency of any one of them may result in decreased plant productivity and/or fertility. Symptoms of nutrient deficiency may include stunted growth, death of plant tissue, or yellowing of the leaves caused by a reduced production of chlorophyll, a pigment needed for photosynthesis.
If a plant cannot get enough nutrients where it already has roots, but it has enough minerals and energy stored to grow at least some new tissue, it can grow roots either down or out, away from the roots it already has. These new roots can then pick up, or “intercept,” nutrients from the “new” soil they’ve moved into.
5. Soil :-
Soil provides plants with foothold for their roots and holds the necessary nutrients for plants to grow; it filters the rainwater and regulates the discharge of excess rainwater, preventing flooding; it is capable of storing large amounts of organic carbon; it buffers against pollutants, thus protecting groundwater.
When growing plants in containers, soil from the garden should not be used if you expect good results. Garden soil usually contains weed seeds, disease organisms, and drains poorly. If you want to use soil from the garden, it must be mixed with other things. Here’s a good recipe:
- 1 part soil
- 1 part peat
- 1 part course sand or perlite
The peat and sand will help to improve the drainage.
Yes, plants can grow without soil, but they cannot grow without the necessities that soil provides. Plants need support, nutrients, protection from adverse temperatures, an even supply of moisture, and they need oxygen around the roots.
